Behind the Scenes: Our Manufacturing Process

In this blog post, we invite you behind the scenes to explore our manufacturing process. We will share how our desks go from design to reality.

Technology Desking build control room and trading desks to a high standard to withstand 24/7 use. Our desks must be durable, lasting ten years or more. To achieve this, we build them with precision engineering using high-grade materials. In a mission-critical environment, users rely on our furniture to provide a safe and comfortable workspace.

Understanding client needs

We send clients a comprehensive list of questions to understand their requirements fully. The questionnaire asks about their equipment needs, how many monitors they use, desk depth, width etc.

Once the questionnaire is complete, Technology Desking can provide a quote. We can also create a 3D visual of the desk at this stage.

After the client has agreed to the work, the design team receive a brief. Using this, the team create a 3D visual showing the furniture in the client's workspace. This allows the client to review the desk design and finish before manufacturing. They can approach us with any questions or modifications.

We create a technical drawing

After a purchase order is approved, the design process begins. Our design team produce all the engineering drawings and 3D model files required. This provides all the measurements and specifications needed to manufacture the desk.

Quality control: Ensuring excellence every step of the way

We thoroughly check our engineering drawings and 3D models before sending to the manufacturers. Before the product is shipped, a 'dry build' is created. This single sample desk allows us to check all the component parts for alignment, and functionality.

It is important to do this before the product is shipped. Any issues or discrepancies discovered during the dry build can be addressed and resolved before final assembly on site. This reduces the likelihood of costly errors or defects in the finished product.

During each stage of production, the manufacturer's check components against our engineering drawings to ensure they are being made correctly.

The manufacturing journey of a desk

Manufacturing a trading desk or control room console is a meticulous process. Raw materials are transformed into the finished product, ready for use in 24/7 environments. The process begins with acquiring high-quality materials. These are carefully selected to meet the desk's design specifications and performance requirements.

Once the materials are secured, the manufacturing process begins with cutting and forming. Our manufacturers use precision engineering techniques such as CNC milling and laser cutting. These cut out the steel frames and laminate desktops.

Precision engineering: The foundation of exceptional desk quality

Precision engineering ensures that every desk component is crafted to withstand the demands of 24/7 use. Computer-controlled machinery and rotating cutting tools precisely cut and shape materials. These computer-controlled machining processes are more precise than traditional milling methods. They can produce complex shapes and intricate designs with great accuracy and consistency.

By harnessing these advanced techniques, we can deliver products that meet the highest quality and performance standards. We provide users with the reliability and precision they need for their critical operations.

Materials selection

We make most of our desk worksurfaces with high-pressure laminate bonded over MDF. Laminate is a scratch and dent-resistant surface. It's also resistant to moisture and staining. This makes it very durable and ideal for 24/7 control room or trading floor use.

Our premium desks are made with solid core laminate, the most durable desktop material. There is no particle board centre; it is solid laminate all the way through. Solid core laminate is scratch and chip-resistant and can be made very thin and very strong. It is a lightweight material that comes in various colours and textures.

Sustainability and environmental considerations

Technology Desking makes desks with a greater-than-average percentage of steel and aluminium. This high percentage of metals helps with their recyclability. Both metals can be recycled infinitely without losing their original properties. This makes them the ultimate sustainable materials.

We manufacture our furniture within the UK (our US business manufactures in the US). Buying locally manufactured furniture substantially reduces your carbon footprint. The manufacturers produce it under stricter environmental regulations. These limit carbon emissions and ensure safe chemical disposal. For instance, companies in the US and UK can face hefty fines if they don't dispose of industrial waste securely and responsibly.

Navigating the shipping process from the factory to your doorstep

Once the desks are ready for deployment, our attention turns to ensuring their safe journey from the factory to their final destination. Our project managers carefully plan each shipment. They work with trusted delivery partners to ensure timely delivery.

The desks are sent flat packed. We carefully pack them with quality packaging materials. These safeguard against any potential damage during transit. Technology Desking provide customer support throughout the shipping process. We address clients' concerns or questions about their shipment.

Would you like to buy locally-made furniture for your workspace? At Technology Desking, we produce our furniture domestically. In the UK for our European clients and in the US for our North American customers. We offer long warranties on most of our products and provide replaceable components for added convenience.
